Look Your Best For The Holiday Season
- November 28, 2015
We hope you enjoyed a tasty Thanksgiving meal. We hope you found everything you were looking during your Black Friday shopping. We hope all your favorite football teams won their games over the Thanksgiving weekend. too.
We are officially in the holiday season, with Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas and New Year’s Day coming soon.
That means lots of time with friends and family. Lots of social media updates, and lots and lots of pictures.
We know you will want to look you best, and that includes flashing your brightest, whitest smile in selfies and group pictures. We can help give you a camera ready smile with our professional teeth whitening at Gentle Dental Care in Plainville, CT.
Commercial vs. professional whitening
We know that whiter teeth look better. They look healthier, and they may even make you look a little younger.
And, dare we say it, you might feel more confident when you have whiter teeth, too.
That’s why Americans spend more than $1 billion one teeth whitening products every year. That’s also why the toothpaste aisle seems to be filled with products that proclaim they will whiten your teeth.
So, how well do these commercial products work? This varies from brand to brand, and between the type of whitening product you choose.
Webmd.com reported that whitening toothpastes can make your teeth a little whiter after a few months of consistent use.
Over-the-counter whitening strips and gels are more efficient. You may see some improvement in a couple weeks with consistent use.
Whitening rinses are the least effective and least efficient option. They can take up to 12 weeks (three months) before you see any improvement.
Christmas parties at your office, with your spouse’s company, and with your family and friends will be starting before you know it. Do you really think the stuff that is just a few aisles from the candy is going to get you ready?
Professional teeth whitening products available at your dentist can work in a matter of hours. Unlike the grocery store products, professional teeth whitening produces dramatic improvements to your teeth.
Most commercial products use the same active ingredient as the professional ones. The difference is degree.
Webmd.com reported that commercial products may be up to 7 percent peroxide or other active ingredients. By comparison, professional teeth whitening products have between 35 and 45 percent peroxide.
Your options in Plainville
Our patients have their choice of in-office and take-home teeth whitening.
The in-office product is the faster option. In two hours or less, you will see your teeth change from yellow to dazzlingly white.
With this treatment, we apply a whitening gel to your teeth. We use a special light to activate the gel. This allows your teeth to become much whiter in a short amount of time.
You should be aware that some patients have temporary gum soreness and tooth sensitivity after this kind of whitening treatment.
For patients who prefer a do-it-yourself approach, our take-home treatment is the perfect solution.
We will make a custom-fitted tray and provide whitening gel to apply at your convenience. You can wear the trays for an hour, or you can wear them overnight.
This may not be as fast as our in-office treatment, but in a couple weeks, you will see a substantial improvement in your smile.
Keeping your smile as white as possible
No matter which whitening option you choose, the results are not permanent. You will be exposing your teeth to new stains as long as you continue using them.
It may be helpful to keep in mind some of the things that cause yellowing or discoloration, such as:
- Using tobacco
- Drinking coffee, cola, wine, tea, and other stain-causing drinks
- Eating stain-causing foods, such as berries, chocolate, and some fruits and vegetables
- Wearing down the enamel on your teeth (which exposes the yellow dentin underneath)
- Taking medications that can cause yellowing as a side effect
Give yourself a white Christmas
You can’t control the weather, but you can control the look of your smile.
