Dental Emergency Tip: How To Handle A Lost Tooth
- August 20, 2017
Here’s something you need to know: a dental emergency can happen fast, and though such an event is seldom life-threatening, it can be life-changing (and not in a good way) if it isn’t handled properly. This is particularly true when a tooth gets knocked out. Trust us, this can happen anywhere: at the gym, by the swimming pool, in the car on the way to work, and so forth. If it ever happens to you, we want you to know what steps to take in order to save your smile. So, keep reading, and then be sure to follow up with our Plainville, CT dental team to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Peltzer!
Don’t Freak Out!
We want you to stay calm, even if there is a lot of blood. First, find the tooth. When you do, be careful to pick it up by the crown. This is the part of the tooth that you normally see when it is in your mouth. Next, you should rinse the tooth with water to remove any dirt. Do not use soap or chemicals since these can damage the tooth. If you haven’t already done so, you also should rinse your mouth with water to remove any blood.
Try to place the tooth back into its socket. You may be able to hold it in place with your finger or by biting down gently. If this isn’t possible, you need to find a way to keep your tooth moist. You can place it in a container of milk. You can hold it in your mouth between your teeth and your cheek, or you can get an emergency tooth preservation kit.
Call Gentle Dental Care as soon as you can. In some cases, it may be possible to put your tooth back in place. Even if we can’t, there are other ways we can preserve your smile.
A Missing Tooth Can Be Repaired Or Replaced
Hopefully it will be possible to save your natural tooth. The sooner you get it to us, the better the chances are. If your tooth can’t be re-inserted, you have good restorative treatment options with us. In fact, Dr. Peltzer is the go-to guy for tooth replacement solutions in the area.
One thing we can do is set you up with a dental implant. This will replace the root of your missing tooth. As you heal, the supporting bone will become fused to your implant just as it has done to the roots of your natural teeth. This will hold your implant securely in place, probably for the rest of your life.
To make it look and feel like it should, we can complete your tooth replacement with a dental crown. Our dental crowns are made with e.max, porcelain, zirconium, or a combination of different materials. All three are strong enough to function just like your remaining healthy teeth, and all three restore the appearance of a healthy smile.
We also offer modern dentures and dental bridges, depending on how many teeth have come out. One way or another, we’ll get you smiling following tooth loss as an adult.
