What Is Crown Lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a cosmetic dental procedure that reshapes the gums to show off more of your teeth. It can be an ideal fix when your gums dominate your smile, or it appears that your gums cover too much of your teeth.
Studies have shown that medical professionals and laypersons agree that a “normal” looking smile is one where two millimeters or less of gum tissue are showing, the New York Times has reported. Anything more than four millimeters of gum tissue comes across as a “gummy smile.”
Most of the time, a gummy smile is caused by genetics — a short upper lip, excessive gum tissue, or just small teeth — but it can also be due to a health condition or taking certain prescription drugs.
There’s only one way to know for sure if crown lengthening is for you: consult with an expert like Dr. Peltzer. He has more than 35 years of experience across several disciplines of dentistry, including cosmetic, preventative, and restorative services. He will be able to help you determine if crown lengthening is a good fit for you.

What Does The Procedure Consist Of?
At Gentle Dental Care, we primarily use laser dentistry to reshape your gums and conservatively remove excess tissue. This reduces the need for cutting and stitches and allows for faster healing than the traditional surgical approach. It also reduces pain during the procedure.
Crown lengthening also usually involves removal of some bone around the base of your tooth to give your teeth a longer appearance after recovery.
Before any work begins, we’ll apply a numbing agent to the area. But to make your crown lengthening and gum reshaping procedure less stressful, Dr. Peltzer offers three sedation options:
- Nitrous oxide. Commonly known as “laughing gas,” the effects of nitrous oxide are felt soon after a few deep breaths from a tube fitted over your nose. Some say they feel a sense of euphoria under the effects of nitrous oxide.
- Oral conscious sedation. If you opt for oral sedation, we’ll prescribe a pill that you’ll take before your procedure. Though everyone reacts differently to the mediation, many say it makes them feel groggy or drowsy.
- IV sedation. We use IV sedation almost exclusively at Gentle Dental Care because of Dr. Peltzer’s extensive formal training and experience with this technique. It’s sometimes called “twilight conscious sedation” because while you’ll be responsive during the procedure, you’ll experience it in almost a dream-like state and have almost no recollection of it when it’s over. IV sedation is best if you want the most comfortable experience possible.
You will feel confident and comfortable under the care of Dr. Peltzer, a nationally known expert in the field of sedation dentistry. In addition to his training and experience, he has been awarded a State of Connecticut Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation permit — a rare achievement for a general dentist in Connecticut!
Recovery after a crown lengthening procedure generally only takes a few weeks, during which you’ll just take it easy. If no bone is removed during your procedure, your recovery will be even faster, and you can expect virtually no discomfort.
Your new gumline will also pay dividends. Not only will you have a more aesthetically pleasing smile, but it will be healthier as well. Removing excess gum tissue reduces your susceptibility to periodontal infection.
Take The First Step Toward A More Attractive, Healthier Smile
Nearly half of adults say a person’s smile is what they remember of a first impression — even more so than what a person says or does the first time they meet, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
