People want longevity and they want to be able to smile and to look good and chew and be comfortable and dental implants are a beautiful way of accomplishing that. Dental implants are a means of anchoring a tooth to their mouth and putting that in in a permanent way such that they don’t have to take it out and clean it like a denture or something to that nature. It can be used in other ways to support dentures and hold dentures in place if they keep sliding around, popping out because the patient doesn’t have enough bone. There are a multitude of uses of dental implants but the most common use is one, two or three teeth replacements and we have treated patients all the way from 19 or 20 years old who were congenitally missing a tooth and didn’t want to affect perfectly neighboring teeth so we put an implant in and a cap over that and it is basically a lifetime restoration if they take care of it. Recently we treated a 90 year old woman who wanted the smile, she was very lively and social and went out with her girlfriends for lunch and everything and had had implants years ago and that was just what she wanted so we did six implants across her upper front teeth with individual caps on them and she doesn’t have to worry about dentures or artificial plastic across the roof of her mouth. She knew her teeth weren’t going to fall out, she could smile, brush them normally, floss them normally and she was delighted.

Dr. Thomas Peltzer, serving the Greater Hartford Area, is a member of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists and has had extensive experience surgically placing dental implants as well as restoring implants with crowns, bridges, and implant-retained dentures.

What Is an Implant?

Individual dental implants have three basic parts: the titanium (replacement) tooth root, the abutment, and the crown. Implants can also be used in groups to secure a bridge or a permanent or removable denture. No more embarrassing or painful dentures slipping or falling out – your replacement teeth will stay put!

The Implant Procedure

The first step in the implant procedure is a thorough evaluation to develop a detailed treatment plan to make sure you get exactly what you need to restore your teeth. If you are a good candidate, our Plainville, CT dentist Dr. Peltzer will discuss the options of individual implants, implant-retained (removable) dentures, implant-supported (permanent) dentures, or an implant-supported fixed bridge. He will take detailed impressions of your teeth to use as a model for your new teeth. If extractions of problem teeth are necessary, that will be done before placing the teeth implant posts. In some cases, placement of the implants can be performed immediately after extraction.

Next, the titanium rod, acting as a replacement tooth root, is surgically placed in the jaw where the missing tooth was. Sedation is available for the procedure, so you will not experience any discomfort. The process of osseointegration, when the implant fuses with the bone, can take 6 to 12 weeks. This anchors the implant permanently into the bone, making it a secure foundation for the replacement tooth. Dr. Peltzer may place your new teeth immediately or give you temporary dentures to wear during the healing process.

Implant Restoration

The restoration of the teeth implant is when the replacement tooth is attached. For an individual implant, an abutment is screwed onto the titanium rod and your custom dental crown, shaded to match the rest of your teeth, is secured on top. Your new tooth will look and feel natural, functioning as well as a natural tooth.

There are several options besides individual implants if more than one tooth is missing:

  • All-on-4 – an upper or lower arch of replacement teeth are attached to four implants.
  • All-on-6 – an upper or lower arch of replacement teeth are attached to six implants.
  • Implant-retained dentures – removable dentures that snap onto an implant-supported bar or are connected by balls and sockets.
  • Implant-supported dentures – permanent full or partial dentures secured to several implants.
  • Fixed bridge – two or more implants supporting a few teeth to permanently fill a gap left by missing teeth.
