Relieving Dental Anxiety From Plainville, CT Dentist Office
If you are scared of going to the dentist, you are not alone. Most people have struggled with dental anxiety or fear about dental visits at one time or another. Unfortunately, anxiety can sometimes cause you to avoid going to the dentist, and procrastinate getting the care you need. But the longer you go without dental care, you may find it harder to go until you are having an emergency or are experiencing pain. Discover more about the process of relieving dental anxiety in Plainville, CT.
Helping patients with dental anxiety is a huge issue in our practice because we are so geared towards the full spectrum of people that are a little bit nervous and want to come in and are just jittery but they are okay all the way to somebody who has extreme fear of the dentist. I’ve had patients that have called from the parking lot and said I’m too afraid to come in and can you come out and examine me out in my car. My entire staff is geared toward that and it begins right at the initial contact, whether it is an email from the patient explaining their issues or a phone call to my staff members and they are very geared into determining what that level of anxiety is with the patient and what the potential means are that we can help them with that. So, we are constantly aware of those issues. I think the staff projects an air of knowledge of that. We certainly do not judge people for being anxious. Many patients that want sedation want it because they are anxious. Listening to the patient, letting them talk, not interrupting them, listening carefully to what they have to say, what their perspective is, what their background has been and what has happened to them in their dental past all gives us clues as to how best to relax that patient and provide the care that they ultimately achieve but it may take longer with some patients and a shorter period of time with other patients depending on that level of anxiety. I rely on my staff to a great degree to be in tune with the patient and to let me know what they perceive to be the patient’s level of anxiety and what the best approach would be to make them comfortable in the office all the way from the beginning first phone call that they make to us.
At Gentle Dental Care, we understand the difficulty some people have with coming to the dentist. Maybe you have had a bad experience or dental phobia in the past. Or you are embarrassed about your teeth and do not want a lecture. Maybe you are not even sure why you are afraid. We want to encourage you to come and see us, and let us show you what a positive dental experience and relieving dental anxiety are.
Comfort is a way of relieving dental anxiety. This includes the little things, like pillows and blankets, soundproof and private operatories, and a staff that cares how you are feeling, both physically and emotionally. If you need anything to help you be more comfortable, please speak up, and we will do our best to do whatever it takes to make you feel better.
When you are battling stress, time constraints can make things worse. We offer longer appointments so we can take our time with you. You will not feel rushed in and out with impersonal urgency. Another benefit, made possible with sedation dentistry, is the ability to take care of multiple procedures in one longer visit. For people who have difficulty with anxiety, this is a wonderful perk. Reducing the number of times you have to talk yourself into going to the dentist is nothing but positive.
We have several sedation options that are great in relieving dental anxiety, and can discuss which one will ensure the best experience for you for your specific procedure. Gentle Dental Care uses local anesthetic, inhaled sedation, and oral sedation, but we also offer what most dentists do not: IV sedation. Plainville, CT dentist Dr. Thomas Peltzer has been awarded a State of Connecticut Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation permit, so you know you are in very good hands.
In addition to his certification, Dr. Peltzer has operating room training that has helped him become an expert at safe and effective use of this advanced form of sedation. Just like what is used in hospitals for a “twilight” level of sedation, we’ll be able to constantly monitor your vital signs and adjust your level of sedative to create the ideal level of relaxation. IV sedation at this level will leave you awake but in a deeply sedated state – we’ll be able to get your attention, but you won’t remember anything about your procedure!
Dr. Thomas Peltzer is nationally known as an expert in the field of sedation dentistry and dental anesthesia. As Connecticut’s premier sedation dentist, Dr. Peltzer is honored to be a member of the prestigious American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and attends hundreds of hours of additional Advanced Anesthesia Continuing Education per year to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in sedation dentistry.
