Teeth Grinding Solutions From Plainville, CT Dentist Office

Bruxism is another name for grinding or clenching of the teeth. It can wear down and damage teeth, break restorations, cause TMJ (jaw joint) disorders, bring on mysterious headaches, and cause facial pain. Many people who have trouble with bruxism do not even realize they are grinding their teeth. Some people grind their teeth at night when they are asleep. Those who clench or grind their teeth during the day often do so when they feel anxious. In fact, one of the common causes of bruxism is stress. Other factors, such as misaligned teeth or an improper bite, can also create discomfort. Less common causes of bruxism are neurological disorders, injuries, and side effects from certain medications. Both children and adults are affected by teeth grinding, though children often outgrow bruxism by their teens.

How Do I Know if Teeth Grinding Is a Problem for Me?

If you are not sure whether you grind your teeth, it is a good idea to talk to your sleep partner about the sounds you make while you are asleep. Also, Plainville, CT dentist Dr. Thomas Peltzer can examine your teeth for signs of unusual wear, check the muscles around your jaw, and ask specific questions about your behavior and medical history to determine if bruxism is a problem for you. Some other signs to watch for include rhythmic contractions of the jaw muscles, morning headaches or jaw pain, teeth that feel loose, and unexplained facial soreness or pain. You may also ask our Plainville, CT dentist for teeth grinding solutions.

How Can I Prevent Bruxism?

If your teeth grinding or clenching is related to stress, you may want to seek counseling, exercise, or try relaxation techniques. Another teeth grinding solutions are cutting out tobacco and decreasing alcohol and caffeine intake to decrease the frequency of the problem.

How to stop grinding teeth? At Gentle Dental Care, we can help stop and prevent further damage from bruxism by fitting you with a custom-made occlusal guard, which is a mouthguard-type of dental appliance. It will keep your teeth from grinding against each other, even while you sleep. If your teeth grinding is caused by bite problems, one of the great teeth grinding solutions is by using crowns and onlays to correct the biting surfaces of your teeth. Once treated properly, the outlook is very good for patients with bruxism.

What Should I Do?

Teeth grinding is a huge issue and it is extremely common, more common than I think patient’s even realize. Sometimes we just see it in terms of a little bit of wear on the teeth and we will alert the patient that it seems like they are grinding their teeth and wearing down the enamel on the teeth and they aren’t even aware of it and so then maybe they will have a nightguard made which is just a clear acrylic appliance that fits gently over their teeth and they wear it typically at night, which is when most tooth grinding occurs by the patient as a preventative kind of thing that way the acrylic wears down very slowly over the years as opposed to wearing away tooth enamel which is much more involved obviously to replace but it is an extremely common problem. If it is not treated, it can progress over the years to a much more severe situation that may eventually require a full mouth rehabilitation because some patients just wear their teeth down, I’ve seen patients that have worn their teeth right down to the gum line and it happens over many years, slowly to the patient so they are often times not even aware of it until I point it out to them that hey, you don’t have any tooth there, you have root but you don’t have tooth. Then we have to talk about crowns and bridges and all those kinds of things to fix the teeth as opposed to the more conservative things that could be done much earlier in terms of a night guard, we call them a bruxism appliance which is a fancy name for it but patients are often times aware of that. Yet patients have to be careful because again the pharmacies sell these things to make a buck on selling $9.95 tooth grinding appliances but the problem with those is that they are not custom made, they aren’t properly tuned to the patient’s bite and so it can precipitate more severe problems of the jaw joints, headaches and various other manifestations that can result from a non-professionally fabricated tooth grinding appliance. I have worn them myself and it takes a night or two to get used to wearing them but after that, I have staff members who wear them routinely every night and they are used to it and if they go to sleep and they realize that they forgot to put it in, they will get up and put it in and go back to bed, it’s almost like they can’t sleep without it they are so used to having it.
